INFLUENCE OF LEXICAL SIMILARITY OF LANGUAGES ON A PUN TRANSLATABILITY

Abstract. The purpose of the article is to study the problem of a pun translatability in the Russian, English and French languages. As a result of the study, the interlanguage correspondences of homonyms and paronyms used to create puns in the source languages are identified. Their linguistic wordplay potential for creating puns in the target languages is considered. The author reveals a language pair with the highest degree of translatability. A comparative study of the specifics of puns translatability basing on homonymy and paronymy in the English - French, English - Russian and French - Russian language pairs has not been conducted before.
