Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of subjective modality in the modern French language, which expresses a speaker’s attitude to the content of the statement in terms of categoricity/supposition. The immediate object is probable-suppositional modality, one of the aspects of this modal relation in the French language, which is implemented in a sentence by means of lexical, lexical-grammatical, morphological means, etc., to which a speaker resorts in cases when he is not sufficiently aware of the facts and information provided to him. The author presents practical material based on the novel "Maigret Has Scruples" by G. Simenon.
