Abstract. The article examines the etymology of borrowings in the modern English language. The study aims to investigate borrowed words, to examine their etymology and semantics and to classify them considering their source and the main historical events having occurred in England. Systematization of borrowings has allowed the author to conclude that words were borrowed from many languages of Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and Australia. The originality of the study lies in the fact that borrowed words are classified considering their source, etymology, semantics and the main historical events, which influenced considerably the formation of the English language.
