TYPE OF ENGINEER-REFORMER IN TWO SCIENCE FICTION NOVELS OF THE 1920S: "THE ETHEREAL TRACT" AND "THE GARIN DEATH RAY"

Abstract. The article examines the novels "The Ethereal Tract" by A. Platonov and "The Garin Death Ray" by A. Tolstoy. The peculiarities of representing the type of an engineer-reformer in utopian fiction of the 1920s are identified. Using a comparative-typological analysis, the researcher reveals Matissen’s and Garin’s images in the context of anti-utopia. Relying on the findings, the author argues that difference of the personages’ worldviews correlates with ambiguity of scientific discoveries. The analysis allows concluding that in both the novels, utopia transforms into anti-utopia.
