TRANSFORMATION OF DETECTIVE GENRE IN NOVELS BY G. K. CHESTERTON AND J. K. ROWLING

Abstract. By the material of G. K. Chesterton’s philosophical novel "The Man Who Was Thursday" (1908) and J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series (1997-2007), the researcher identifies the paradigm under which the genre nature of these works undergoes transformation - from a detective story to a religious novel. The paper aims to examine mysterious events described by G. K. Chesterton and J. K. Rowling and to identify plot elements similar to both the authors. The researcher reveals the genre logic due to which an adventurous novel gradually transforms to a psychological novel with Christian moral and the theme of a hero’s personal development manifests itself.
