PROBLEMS OF THE ARABIC WOMEN IN THE NOVEL "GIRLS OF RIYADH" BY RAJAA ALSANEA

Abstract. The article analyses the feminist novel by the modern Saudi authoress Rajaa Alsanea "Girls of Riyadh" revealing the problem of gender relations in the Middle East. The novel, severely criticized by the Saudi conservatives and highly appreciated by progressive public opinion, is analysed at the genre, thematic and problematic levels. It is shown that the authoress criticizes the Muslims’ sluggishness, raises some topical problems (inequality of men and women in Saudi Arabia, women’s unfreedom when choosing career, husband, clothes) and logically concludes that the patriarchal Saudi society should change.
