NEW ZEALAND PRISON JARGON IN THE FUNCTIONAL ASPECT

Abstract. The article examines the functional potential of New Zealand prison jargon. It is shown that the functioning of this socially determined form of New Zealand English is conditioned both by its existential features and the needs of New Zealand prison community. The conclusion is made that this corporate social jargon performs three basic functions (communicative, emotional and cognitive ones), each of which can be subdivided into individual, specific sub-functions.
