Abstract. The article examines the personality of the main character of G. Swift’s novel "Waterland" in the light of evolution from a romantic teenager to a professional historian. The study is based on the material of three theses defended in Russia. Polemicizing with Swift researchers involved in analysing the image of the introspective historian Tom Crick, the paper examines the interaction of cognitive aspects of a detective story (crime and investigation) with personal formation of the hero studying the life of his ancestors. The conclusion is made that the self-addressed question "Why?" is the basic motive for Swift’s character to study history, just in the past he can find answers to the questions that concern him. But this investigative work is complicated by the fact that Tom has to analyse psychological motives of unpredictable actions of historical personages.
