Abstract. The article provides a structural and component analysis of John Fowles’s novels, which are considered from the viewpoint of metatextuality and intertextuality. The analysis allows concluding that the meta-text is formed according to the principle of the "Chinese casket", in which universal precedent and self-precedent phenomena, numerous continual storylines and ideological motives (closed space, isolation, loneliness, etc.), elements of "mise-en-abyme" and replication serve as guidelines combining the storylines of each separate novel into single meta-text, which is readable and understandable at different levels.
