THEOSOPHY OF COLOUR BY ANDREI BELY AND PAVEL FLORENSKY

Abstract. The article for the first time analyses Andrei Bely’s artistic and philosophical conception of colour in correlation with Pavel Florensky’s doctrine. Florensky’s and Bely’s interpretations of colour symbolism of "celestial visions" are truly mysterious because their cosmogonic conceptions are focused on Sophia, the Divine Wisdom. However, it turns out that Andrei Bely’s colour symbolism is closely associated with the poet’s personal experience and represents his personages’ emotional state. Both the writer and the philosopher aspired to spiritualize the human’s existence, to enable him to see transcendental divine light in its earthly sensual chromatic implementation.
