Abstract. The article is devoted to studying the semantic variation of the pronoun ‘one’ with a view to reveal its different possible additional meanings and functions in the speech of the Englishmen belonging to different social classes. Using the continuous sampling method developed by professor T. A. Ivushkina, the authors identify the unrecorded cases of specific use of this pronoun in the meaning of the first person singular in the speech of the upper class representatives. The method of sociolinguistic categories has allowed identifying the peculiar functions of ‘I-one’ pronoun beyond normative grammar: distancing, domination, understatement.
