Abstract. The article discusses Jafar Khandan’s criticism of the creative work of the great poet-philosopher Nizami Ganjavi. The paper provides a survey of J. Khandan’s scientific works devoted to analysing the socio-political and philosophical problems raised in Nizami’s poetry; it is shown that assessing the poet’s creative heritage, J. Khandan took into account the specificity of a particular historical period. Being a Soviet researcher, J. Khandan did not openly express his attitude to Nizami’s religious and spiritual world. He is extremely cautious in this matter. The paper emphasizes J. Khandan’s contribution to the study of Nizami’s epoch, to the systematization of his heritage.
