BETWEEN PAST AND PRESENT: PECULIARITIES OF REPRESENTING THE CATEGORY OF TIME IN GONZALO DE BERCEO’S WORKS

Abstract. The article examines the works of the medieval Spanish poet Gonzalo de Berceo in the context of changes in the perception of the time category in the European culture of the XIII century. These changes involved abandoning the conception of absolute past and appealing to modern reality. The opposition of temporal planes of past and present plays an essential role in the organization of Berceo’s poetical texts. Contrasting but interacting temporal planes allow two-dimensional human-centred interpretation of Berceo’s texts. It’s a manifestation of a relevant for that epoch tendency to focus on present, on the surrounding world and, consequently, on a human being.
