Abstract. The article compares the worldviews represented in J. Steinbeck’s narrative "Of Mice and Men" and M. Gorky’s play "The Lower Depths". For the first time, the paper examines biblical influences observed in these literary works. The researcher argues that the philosophical content of Gorky’s play is associated with Christianity, and Steinbeck’s narrative - with the Old Testament; moreover, interpretation of these literary works as examples of social struggle restricts their content. The role of inter-text as a hermeneutic key to Steinbeck’s narrative is emphasized. It is shown that this narrative offers a fairy ideal.
