AMERICAN FOLK SONG "OH SHENANDOAH": TEXTOLOGICAL STUDY

Abstract. The article focuses on the textological study of some variants of the American folk song "Oh Shenandoah". The author aims to identify whether the analysed texts are the variants of the same song or possible versions. The research objectives are formulated as follows: to determine the theoretical framework of the notions "variant" and "version", to analyse the historical roots of this composition, to examine its poetical content. The relevance of the paper is conditioned by the necessity to study the American folklore as one of the components of the American national culture. The originality of the research is obvious - the texts of the American folk song "Oh Shenandoah" have not been previously subjected to the textological analysis.
