THE MODAL VERB ? AND PECULIARITIES OF ITS TRANSLATION INTO THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

Abstract. The article is devoted to the structural-semantic analysis of the modal verb ?, which functions in the Chinese language and changes its meaning depending on the speech situation and the speaker’s intonation. The paper discusses the peculiarities of using this modal verb in Chinese and the variants of its translation into Russian. The authors conclude that the modal verb ?, unlike the Russian auxiliary verbs - мочь, способен , etc., - has a wide range of semantic meanings and can belong to different semantic categories of modality.
