Abstract. The article is devoted to studying onomatopoeia of the English language. The originality of the study is in the fact that for the first time onomatopoetic and sound-descriptive words are examined from the viewpoint of the existence of causal and sign relations between their acoustic form and lexical meaning. The author focuses on analyzing linguistic facts in philo- and ontogenesis and emphasizes the autological nature of onomatopoetic words, which indicates their sign nature. The research results are as follows: the author has proved the motivation of some language system units, revealed the specificity of early semio-genesis, and the peculiarities of thinking of an ancient man and a child. The findings have allowed the author to conclude on genetic linkage between causal and sign relations and to identify the factors determining their interrelation.
Key words and phrases: фоносемантика, причинные отношения, знаковые отношения, признак предмета, восприятие, номинация, мотивированность слова, phono-semantics, causal relations, sign relations, feature of object, perception, nomination, word motivation
