Abstract. The article analyzes the functions realized in a political essay. The political essay is at the intersection of journalistic and newspaper styles, which determine the presence of the influencing and informational function in it, respectively. In addition, the political essay is significantly affected by political discourse, the manipulative nature of which contributes to the promotion of the influencing function to the fore. Under the impact of political discourse, we observe the existence of the manipulative function in the political essay. The functions of the political essay are carried out through the implementation of subjective and objective modality. At the same time, the author often resorts to subjective objectification for submission of subjective information "under cover".
