Abstract. The article analyzes the factors supposedly influencing the singular/plural agreement of the English verb-predicate with the subject expressed by the quantitative-nominal word combination. Among such factors the author identifies the factor of animateness, the precedence of predicate, the level of the remoteness of the verb-predicate from the subject. Examples from the modern English fiction serve as factual material.
