Abstract. The article considers the etymological bases of synonymic lines of adjectives with the meaning "small value". The authors examine the differential features of synonyms, identify etymologically coloured adjectives, and analyze the ways to replenish this stratum of the English vocabulary. It is shown that the overwhelming majority of adjectives of this lexico-semantic group appeared as a result of affixal word-formation. The paper concludes that borrowing is one of the most productive ways of nomination in the English language.
Key words and phrases: этимология, синонимический ряд, пространственные прилагательные размера, экспрессивность, заимствование, etymology, synonymic line, spatial adjectives of size, expressivity, borrowing
