THE THEME OF CHILD LABOUR IN THE STORIES OF A. P. CHEKHOV

Abstract. A. P. Chekhov, one of the first, along with V. G. Korolenko, A. I. Kuprin, M. Gorky and others, tried to draw the attention of the society of that time to the problem of exploitation of child labourers and their backbreaking work in bourgeois society. The author analyzes the theme of child labor in Chekhov’s work and shows that this topic has not only a biographical basis and is founded on the writer’s personal experience, but also is of great socio-political significance, since it deals with the issues of social inequality and the exploitation of child labour in Russia. The paper makes a fundamental conclusion about the public and social significance of the works of A. P. Chekhov on child labour.
