Abstract. For the first time the reviews on L. N. Tolstoy’s novel "Anna Karenina" in the newspaper "Syn Otechestva" ("The Son of the Fatherland") are introduced into scientific use as an autonomous research object. Critical surveys are fitted into the context of journalistic polemics of the middle of the 1870s and are considered in the aspect of representing the typical views on the novel. The researcher identifies the specificity of "Syn Otechestva" reviewer’s attitude, discovers the contradictions in his arguments considering the understanding of author’s intention, the peculiarities of composition, the system of images, and the originality of narrative texture.
