FROM "FEMINA INCOGNITA" TO GENDER IDENTITY: MOUNTAIN GIRL’S IMAGE IN THE WORKS BY THE RUSSIAN WRITERS OF THE XIX CENTURY

Abstract. Within the Russian-Caucasian cultural contacts the article examines gender marked North Caucasian mountain girl’s image of the XIX century in the artistic interpretation of A. A. Bestuzhev-Marlinsky, M. Y. Lermontov, and L. N. Tolstoy. The Russian writers who can be rightly considered experts in Caucasian studies reconstruct the most detailed ethno-gender portrait of a woman, identifying the peculiarities of her appearance, communicative behaviour and her peace-making activity, the ability to rise "above the conflict". The author of the article also touches upon such important problems as "the Faust complex", the cult of the horse and the phenomenon of gender asymmetry in depicting the images of men and women.
