Abstract. The article provides a survey of the modern Russian and foreign scientific researches in the sphere of inference and discourse. The author focuses on discussing and analyzing the existing inference classifications with a view to evaluate their universality and to propose her own classification of inference types on the basis of more universal criteria of speech cogitation not associated with a certain product of speech activity. According to the author, such mental operations as comparison, framing, integration, elimination, deduction and induction may serve as a basis to identify the appropriate types of inference. The paper provides a survey of these operations in relation to different utterances and concludes whether these types of mental operations can be considered as a basis of different types of inference.
