"THE MARCH" BY E. L. DOCTOROW: HISTORY AND FICTION

Abstract. The article is devoted to the comprehension of the specificity of relationship between history and fiction in E. L. Doctorow’s novel "The March". Despite the frequent mentioning of historicism as a key feature of the creativity of Doctorow, this is the only novel defined by the prose writer as historical. A detailed description of landscapes, images of soldiers and civilians along with the rendering of the historical reality of the mentioned period is a feature of the writer’s individual style. For the first time the study compares the content of the novel with the data of historical works about the period of the Civil War in the USA. The images of historical personalities and elements of their biographies, details of events, historical facts mentioned in the novel are taken into consideration.
