ON THE ISSUE OF ETYMOLOGY OF SOME GERMAN HYDRONYMS

Abstract. The origin of the oldest Indo-European hydronyms on the territory of Germany is considered in the article. The results of the modern Indo-European studies in the field of morphology and phonology are used. The possibilities of the laryngeal theory application in the etymologization of the oldest hydronyms are revealed. The effectiveness and universality of its use in the solution of the problems of historical changes in water names are revealed. The role of sonantal coefficients in the structure of the ancient European hydronyms is shown and the question of the depth of hydronomic reconstruction is posed.
