Abstract. The article examines the peculiarities of "Pravda" newspaper approach to interpreting the theme of the Caribbean crisis. Despite the relative freedom, which mass media acquired in "thaw" period, under conditions of international conflict print media were again placed under the strict control of the CPSU. The information on the Caribbean crisis was delivered in the aspect of confrontation of socialist and capitalist systems. The purpose of edition was to form the "right" conception of international conflict participants among the Soviet citizens. For that purpose journalists used such manipulative techniques as distortion and concealment of information which was more typical of pre-war journalism. The content-analysis of publications about the situation on the Island of Freedom in September-October 1962 identified what conception "Pravda" newspaper was guided by when tackling the issue of the Caribbean crisis.
