METAPHORS OF MAN’S INNER WORLD IN THE NOVEL "DEMONS"

Abstract. The article examines the metaphorical representation of the man’s inner world in the novel "Demons" by F. M. Dostoyevsky. The continuous sample analysis of the psychological sphere metaphors in the novel reveals the following basic metaphorical models of this sphere: "FEELING / THOUGHT IS LIGHT", "FEELING IS ARDOUR", "FEELING IS FIRE / BURNING", "THE DESTRUCTIVE IDEA IS DEVIL / DEMON" (M-models are listed in the order of their frequency). The ambivalence of meanings, rendered by metaphors, points indirectly to characters’ failure to distinguish good and evil, denounced by Dostoyevsky.
