Abstract. The article analyzes the locus of "town monastery", its topographical heterogeneity and the role in the artistic space of F. M. Dostoyevsky’s novel "The Brothers Karamazov".The authors argue that "town monastery" of the provincial town Skotoprigonyevsk, the real prototype of which is Staraya Russa, is a dominant of story-line and ideological-conceptual development of the novel. It is shown that a monastery metaphor becomes the key one when approaching the essential problem - correlation of sin and sainthood, struggle of good and evil in the human heart.
