THE PROBLEM OF A HUMAN BEING IN J. STEINBECK’S NOVELS "THE GRAPES OF WRATH" AND "THE WINTER OF OUR DISCONTENT"

Abstract. In J. Steinbeck’s creative work the problem of a human being, personality is one of the key ones. In his biggest novels - "The Grapes of Wrath" and "The Winter of Our Discontent" - the writer discovers the problems of human existence in the unfa-vourable social environment, the problems of protecting the rights and worldview of an individual. Following the tradition of Honor? de Balzac and Theodore Dreiser, J. Steinbeck identifies the circumstances, which turned the Joad family into home-less vagrants ("The Grapes of Wrath") and facilitated Ethan Hawley’s moral decline ("The Winter of Our Discontent").
