THE TITLE AS AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF A PARATEXT AND THE SPECIFICITY OF ITS TRANSLATION

Abstract. The article deals with the concept of a paratext and the degree of its development in Russian and foreign philology. The elements of the paratext, divided into peritext and epitext, are studied. Particular attention is given to the title as an important component of the paratext. The author carries out a comparative analysis of the titles of the novels by the French writer M. Houellebecq and their translations into the Russian, English and Italian languages. Also the degree of adequacy of the translated titles to the original ones is analyzed and the deformations are revealed. Finally, the results of the study are summarized and conclusions are drawn.
