DIALOGUENESS OF A WORK OF FICTION (BASED ON THE NOVEL "THE FRENCH LIEUTENANT’S WOMAN" BY JOHN FOWLES)

Abstract. The study considers any literary text as a result of a cultural dialogue, characterized by intertextuality, because it contains implicit or explicit links with the precedent literary text. The article is devoted to the analysis of how J. Fowles in his novel "The French Lieutenant’s Woman" in the dialogue with the Victorian epoch through precedent texts emphasizes the themes of freedom, attitudes toward tradition, women’s emancipation, social conventions and canons of social life. Recalling personalities and reproducing the writers’ manner of the Victorians (G. Meredith, J. Austin, G. Eliot, Ch. Dickens, Th. Hardy, etc.), J. Fowles draws parallels, reinterprets the foundations of Victorianism and opens the reader a new vision of the non-existent era.
