Abstract. The article is devoted to studying the borders of silence in communication. The topicality is determined by the need for the systematic study of the silence act, its interpretation in the text. The author discusses various definitions of the notion "border", identifies the causes of silence and describes the non-verbal actions performed by characters at entrance to silence and exit from it, gives examples of communicative situations from the fiction prose. As a result of the communicative situations analysis, it is concluded that the cause of silence in most cases is communicants’ psychological state.
