MOTIVE OF LAUGHING/CRYING IN THE BURYAT HEROIC EPOS

Abstract. In the article, the motive of simultaneous laughing/crying, common in the Buryats’ heroic epos, has been considered for the first time. The epic formula with the components of crying and laughing has persistent nature and minor variations. Laughing/crying in epic narration are included in the range of actions of both main and secondary characters; they characterize the unstable mental state of characters in an extraordinary situation and express such emotions as sorrow, grief, sadness, or joy, happiness. The motive of simultaneous laughing and crying in the Buryat heroic epos is associated with archaic passage rites, the elements of which were preserved in the Buryats’ traditional rituals.
