ON the COGNITIVE NATURE OF FORMATION AND INTERPRETATION OF PRAGMATIC meaning

Abstract. In the article the authors consider the cognitive nature of pragmatic meaning and point out the specificity of the components necessary for its interpretation: the context, the proposition, the addressee, the linguistic sign, the category of choice, and so on. By the example of academic discourse and discourse of subtitles, it is shown that the functions and the meanings of their linguistic components are closely related to the recipient’s background knowledge, the notions of logic and norm existing in the society. Accordingly, the interpretability of pragmatic meaning depends on the cognitive activity of the addressee (the level of knowledge on the topic of communication, his/her interests, etc.). It is concluded that the processes of formation and interpretation of pragmatic meaning are of cognitive nature (for example, the interpretation of implicature).
