Abstract. The article is devoted to studying speech units with a bi-transitive construction which undergo semantic shift of a metaphorical or metonymical type. The analysis of empiric material allowed the author to identify the conceptual structure of metaphorical and metonymical transfers conditioning the extension of bi-transitive semantics of a construction, to discover the potential of metaphor and metonymy as mental mechanisms providing the figurativeness of a statement and the adaptation of abstract categories within the space of objective semantics.
