THE AUTHORS’ ORNITHOLOGICAL METAPHORS AND SIMILES BASED ON THE BIRD IMAGE IN THE WORKS OF THE ENGLISH WRITERS G. DURRELL AND J. HERRIOT

Abstract. In the article the analysis of the authors’ metaphors and similes, borrowed from 8 works of the English animal writer, naturalist and zoologist Gerald Darrell, as well as from a work of James Herriot, the English animal writer and veterinarian, is presented. The image of the bird is at the heart of all selected metaphors. The purpose of the article is to reveal metaphors and similes based on the image of the bird in the works of the writers under analysis, to identify the role of metaphors and similes in the creation of a multifaceted image, and to note the characteristic features of birds projected onto a human being, and vice versa.
