Abstract. The article reveals the functionality of irony in L. Ulitskaya’s novel "The Green Tent". It is proved that the names of novels and chapters included in them contain an ironic "pretense", with the help of which the true philosophical and axiological meaning of the historical events depicted in the work is deciphered. Irony acquires an independent mode of artistry in L. Ulitskaya’s novels. The ironic mockery fulfills three main functions: the transfer of author’s consciousness, the characterization of the images and the travesty with the aim of softening the drama and tragedy of the narrative.
