Abstract. In the article the attempt to analyze and describe the various functions of the image of the window in B. Pasternak’s novel "Doctor Zhivago" is made. Some of these functions have already been described by researchers as applied to writer’s poetic works, however it is important to understand how they "work" in the space of prose; others are considered for the first time. In particular, in the novel a very special window function can be detected: to create the effect of stereoscopy and overlapping of two images each other and their juxtaposition. Or one of the functions can "be inverted" and acts in its opposite meaning (the function of the window to be the source of the visual impression). The image in the window can be perceived not only from the inside, but also from the outside. In the book "Doctor Zhivago", the window has not only a number of habitual functions, but also entails a whole complex of motives related to inspiration, creativity, imagination and poetry.
