A FARM AND THE WHOLE EARTH. THE AREA OF HISTORICAL ESTRANGEMENT IN A. P. CHEKHOV’S SHORT STORY "GOOSEBERRIES"

Abstract. The article deals with the artistic principle of marginality, peculiar to the prose and plays of A. P. Chekhov. The emphasis is put on the modelling by the author of the short story "Gooseberries" of the area of historical, social, and ethical estrangement, expanding dangerously at the turn of the centuries. The new hypothesis in Chekhov’s creativity studies is successively proved. According to this hypothesis A. P. Chekhov was one of the first artists in the national literature who depicts the special world of the Russian suburbs - the space where the social storms are destined to be born. The method of "close reading" is combined with the comparative analysis in the research. The main result of the study is the development of a new perspective on the problem of the spatial organization of Chekhov’s prose.
