Abstract. Recently in the periodical press the articles, which are not always of a scientific nature, about the traditional beliefs of the Chuvash people, the ancient Chuvash pantheon and pandemonium have regularly appeared. In this connection, the authors think that the study of the conventional characters of the lower world in the Chuvash oral poetic creativity is very relevant. Within the framework of this research, the specific problem on the mystical and mythological ideas of the Chuvash people about the folklore character Inkek is covered.
