Abstract. The article considers the creative work of the little known in Russia British poet of the beginning of the XX century Edward Thomas; in particular, the paper analyzes the influence of the First World War on the development of his patriotic views and feelings. By the example of certain poems the researcher traces the gradual evolution of these views in the war years and tries to explain why the mature person not given to jingoism aspired to defend his native country on the front line and even to give his life for its freedom and well-being.
