Abstract. The article discusses the introduction of the second foreign language as a compulsory subject in Russian schools from a socio-economic point of view. This approach allows a new look at the innovation after weighing its advantages and disadvantages. According to the authors, the difficulties, lying in this plane, are the most severe constraints to the implementation of this educational innovation.
