Abstract. This article is devoted to the issue of modality in the German language in comparison with the Russian language. The authors propose a new description of modality as a special form of expression of extra-lingual and intra-lingual relations. In the work objective, subjective and intra-syntactic modalities as the three main types of this grammatical category are considered. The main attention is paid to the means of expression of modal meanings, which have no analogues in the Russian language. In particular, it is a form of conjunctive in the German language, which has more possibilities for modality expression than the subjunctive mood in the Russian language. The peculiarities of modal meanings are shown by the examples of the syntactic constructions taken from the modern German fiction.
