SYMBOLIC SOUND METAPHOR AS A MEANS OF IDENTIFYING THE SYMMETRY OF SOUND-DESCRIPTIVE RELATION BETWEEN THE WORD SOUND AND ITS MEANING (BY THE MATERIAL OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE)

Abstract. In the article the sound-symbolic metaphor based on sound symbolism is considered, and its role in the creation of new words is emphasized. A large number of examples confirm that the phenomenon under study arises from secondary associations on the basis of synesthetic cross modal abstraction, as a result of which the sounds of the word are capable of forming sound-symbolic metaphors.
