Abstract. Among the fundamental ethical categories the authors mention "altruism" which A. Comte introduced in the official terminological system in the middle of the XVIII century to replenish the missing pair category "egoism". Provided analysis of folk tales allows the authors to conclude on "altruism" ambivalent, multi-conceptual nature, and richness of its variational spectrum. One of the most efficient means to develop altruism among the younger generation is the moral and ethical experience accumulated in folk tales. At the same time the conditions of the modern multi-cultural world determine the necessity to study the tales of different cultures.
