Abstract. In the article for the first time in epos studies the status of the borrowed character Hormusta is examined by analyzing the traditional motive of the request for assistance in the eposes of the Mongolian peoples. The consideration of this motive in the Mongolian and Buryat epic works in a comparative aspect allows determining the role and place of the Buddhist deity Hormust in the multi-stage different eposes. Hormusta as the borrowed Buddhist character in the epic tradition of the Mongolian peoples reveals an ambiguous position due to the incomplete adaptation on the primordial mythological basis.
