THE FRENCH WAVES IN HISTORY OF THE GERMAN LITERARY LANGUAGE (THE XI-XVIII CENTURIES)

Abstract. The article analyzes the layer of borrowed lexical units of the Gallic origin as a part of the German literary language. The French influence on the specified language can be divided into three waves: the period of chivalry and crusades (the XI-XIII century), the period of the French absolutism (the XV-XVII century) and the French Revolution (the XVIII century). Thanks to the desire of France for hegemony in Europe, the French language had significant influence on the development of the vocabulary of the German literary language in certain periods of history.
