Abstract. The article examines pragma-linguistic approach to diagnosing speaker’s personal, psychological, social qualities on his speech and presents the results of pragma-linguistic study on peculiarities of the Russian students’ speech behaviour when translating the English text. The author analyzes pragma-linguistics as an interdisciplinary sphere, the intersection of logico-philosophical, stylistic, ethnographical and psychological trends. The paper discusses the problem of professional competence formation among the students on the speciality "Linguistics", profile - translation and translation studies (the English language). It is shown that linguistic study should consider human factor and human communicative competence. The author concludes that language is a means of communicants’ dynamic interaction and its functioning is closely connected with situational, social and psychological context.
