CATEGORY "UNDERSTATEMENT" AS A WAY OF IMPLICIT SENSE EXPRESSION

Abstract. This article is devoted to implicative communication considered within the framework of pragmalinguistics and intercultural communication. Interpretation of hidden meaning depends on such factors as understanding of the context, common background knowledge of interlocutors, the level of their linguistic competence and acquaintance with communicative traditions and norms. The author analyzes the relationship of the categories "implicitness" and "understatement", focuses on some functions and ways of expression of the categories under study in speech.
